In case any high school or college students are interested in either a free copy of Visual Studio .Net or in competing in a legitimate online geek contest, here's the scoop.

Imagine Cup is an online contest sponsored by Microsoft. They have 3 rounds to get to Japan, in about 8 categories. You can enter as many contests as you like, including algorithms, IT, web development, and Film to name a few.

Registration ends Sunday, so sign up soon, and you only have a couple days left to submit entries for 3 of the contests (Visual Gaming, Algorithms, IT). If you register, regardless of whether you submit anything, you can sign up for TheSpoke.net Premium membership, for free. It normally costs $25, but theSpoke is hosting the Imagine Cup and they are letting registered persons in the Imagine Cup get their premium membership as well.

With the Premium membership, you can get a copy of Visual Studio .Net, once you prove you're a student (by faxing/e-mailing a copy of your student ID or schedule). It's for the Academic version, but it has ALL the functionality of the Pro version. Then you can dowload the ISO's (including MSDN library) or have them mail it to you (I did both).

Here's a link describing the entire process with screenshots:
