Title: giving up on asus support
Post by: MuffDiver on September 06, 2005, 09:07:54 PM
Ok, I am thinking, that I can't get what that videocard is worth on ebay, but I can build a new pc for this card to work in for about 400 bucks or less.

I just need to know what processor to buy.

I either want 3700+ 64 (http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16819103464) or 3800+ 64 x2 (http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16819103562)

one is the clawhammer, the other manchester dual core.... not sure which to get. help me out.  my memory is compatible with both, so I just need some advice.

How fast is your memory?

Price alone could decide the difference, there being a $110 gap. Obviously the X2 is dual-core, so I would wonder what you expect to be running for apps/services on this machine. Also, 754 isn't as popular as 939, so in case you ever needed to replace/upgrade/swap the CPU a 939 choice might be wiser.
EDIT: The 939 version of the 3700+ is $273 at NewEgg.com

Personally, when I pick out anything like a CPU, I mentally line graph the price-to-performance ratios. When I see a huge increase in price after a certain model, I typically go with that.

From my quick analysis, you have the choices pinned for non-dual-core CPUs (3700+) and dual-core (3800+ X2). So determine whether you really need the dual-core (which I would love to have someday), and how much your willing to dish for that gain. Check tomshardware.com for that, I will read up on it myself later this week.

disregard, I am going witht he Athlon 64x2 3800+, and an EPOX Motherboard (http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16813123246).  I am thinking 2nd day might not be fast enough, but I will see how much it is.

Oh, my ram in pc3200...just bought it 3 months ago when I built my last pc.  But I am not passing on this $700+ video card I just got.  I will need to buy more ram in the near future.  I have a dual core P4 at work, I think it is pretty good, but for an extra $100  I think I can swing it, this time.

I have not submittd my order as of yet, but will go over options one more time then decide.

Good move on picking the 939 pin.  You can always upgrade later.

Good choice, I approve and envy ;-).

Anyone know if there are any socket 939 boards with AGP? I doubt it but figured I'd ask. Otherwise I might like to buy a used Socket A CPU, 2800+ to 3000+ range to replace my aging 2500+ Barton core.

Let me know if you decide you won't need it. I won't be upgrading for at least 6 months otherwise.

Well, like I said, I just bought it 3 months ago for $187.  I have all the stuff it came with, so if ya want it I guess you could make an offer. I know that retail ones are hard to find and my buddy had a tough time getting an oem one.  This one has 2 years and 9 months left on the warrenty. If ya really want it just PM me an offer.

as a side note:  I next day'd my order.  should be here before friday and most likely on thursday   B)  :D  :D

I am jones'n for a game..... twitch twitch and a new mouse.... geesh.

So I shouldn't get this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131510)?

Heheh. I have heard enough bad-mouthing the Asus to realize I should try an Epox mobo. I also stopped being a noob thinking I can't go AMD64 AND have my AGP too (AIW x800 XT). DUH! There are several boards that will give my my AGP and AMD64 so I can upgrade in peace, in 939 nonetheless.

So I will follow in your footsteps Muff with a slightly more modest selection of CPU and non-Asus mobo choice.

This is spurred by my horrible choice of upgrading my video card to current gen with a 2-yr old 1.8GHz CPU holding it back. I crave hardware nirvana once more!

I originaly looked at that one...  I built a pc for my buddy here a about 2 months ago, and used an Epox board.  It rocks so hard.  6 Sata controllers.  Had 2 sepreat raid controllers includinga  raid 5 option.I got him set up with a 80gig WD external backup for his critical stuff and put him on a 4 disk stipe on 4 37.6 WD Raptor drives(10,000RPM).  The Epox board is pretty nice, and I guess I was just really upset about the way ASUS support handled my situation, but they did give me a $700 video card to replace my $325 card.  I just wanted something a little more compatible with what I had.  they are still a good company.
